It’s been a little while since I last did one of these. I was preoccupied with other things (e.g. rewriting Turpentine).

The idea for this one came from browsing through my ‘inspiration folder’ and noticing all the screen grabs of online galleries. I wasn’t able to think of a good way to set up arrow navigation, so that useful interface element is missing.

No wireframe this time; I just picked a column count and went at it.

There’s a bonus feature today: a screencast from a failed attempt in the morning.

The background is by bittbox and licensed as CC:BY.

The mechanics of the design are pretty standard, but the background is like nothing I’ve ever done before. My goal for the next few (or more) designs is to make something far less restrained than I’m used to. I feel I need to go in unusual directions if I really want to advance myself.

This one is primarily an update of my original portfolio design to add an ‘about’ section and to try a higher column count (sixteen compared to my usual eight or ten). I didn’t really finish the description sections, which will retain their formatting.

Decided to go for a Twitter interface since I’ve been working on a client. It’s not great, it’s not original, it’s not done. But it doesn’t hurt to try.

Yesterday I said:

I like multi-column layouts, even though they don’t really fit with unpredictable screen height. I have an idea of how that could be fixed, but I want to try doing it before I talk about it. (Not that it’s worth money or patents or anything.)

Well, this isn’t an implementation, but it’s a preview of how I envision it looking.

Took a slightly different approach with this one. I like multi-column layouts, even though they don’t really fit with unpredictable screen height. I have an idea of how that could be fixed, but I want to try doing it before I talk about it. (Not that it’s worth money or patents or anything.)

Not much to say. Finished reading The Invisibles today; I was inspired to make something that looked like Barbelith. Had to make some alterations.

The nav was a last-moment change after I stopped recording for the screencast; it’s an improvement, but still not great.

No Design-a-day Today

I was on a day trip, and got back too late. But it all works out, because design #1 was released early — so I did finish with five designs this week.
